| Pizza And Fondue Party |
I've eaten quite a few good things in this last week or so but I have an unfortunate lack of pictures for some of it. Noteably the Japanese lunch I ate with Jenny. I will take a picture when I next go back there. I ordered the unagi don which was eel cooked in miso, soy and lemon juice on a bed of rice. It was pretty good and because it wasn't doused in teriyaki sauce, I could sample the taste of eel which actually tasted a lot like a type of fish. Jenny ordered the sashimi don which was half cabbage, half rice and a bit of sashimi. It was in the hugest bowl so you can only imagine how much cabbage Jen ate.
Anyways, as those who were present at the occassion know, I had a little fondue shindig last weekend. I made some homemade pizza.
This is the dough making process. It's the best part of making pizza.

I didn't get some full pizza shots because I was too slow but here's my plate. I was trying to be a little experimental with my pizza flavours but they didn't really turn out nearly as good as I had planned. The satay chicken was a bit dry and the satay sauce went kinda hard. The shrimp and surimi sweet chili was okay but the sauce went a bit hard on that as well. The pesto was also a bit dry and needed more flavour. The only pizza I found successful was the much more Italian style meatlovers pizza. I guess I should stick to what I know. I guess you can't go wrong when you smother a pizza in sauce, cheese and meat. Next time, I'm just gonna make a bunch of meatlovers pizzas.
The dessert was my favourite part despite the fact I fried my tongue right and good. The fondue set Jen got me for my birthday last year was ultra-powerful, running on methylated spirits rather than the meagre little candle some have. We poured a ton of Hershey's chocolate syrup in. Justina sweetened it up a little bit more when she dropped a bit of dark chocolate in while attempting to make chocolate chocolate fondue. We dipped strawberries, apple, pear, orange, banana, donuts and marshmallows into the fondue until we were way too overloaded with sweetness.

It was a good night. My apologies to my girlies who couldn't make it. Hopefully you can make it to my next great shindig.

| Salmon Eggs Benedict |
I knew I should have taken my camera with me today but alas, I did not. I had a really delicious meal though that is well worthy of me documenting even without the visual evidence.
I was feeling a little low on energy so being the creature of habit I am, I popped into the cafe at the bottom of Kate Edgar (which I've been to every Wednesday for the last 3 weeks). I can't remember it's name. I am such a good reviewer. lol. But if you go to Auckland Uni, you know what I am talking about. I pondered the menu for awhile before deciding on the Eggs Benedict with salmon. Such a good choice. I wasn't expecting something that good from a cafe at university so I was pleasantly surprised. It was nicely presented with the toast, spinach, salmon and eggs all stacked up on top of each other and doused in hollandaise. It looked extremely appetising. The salmon was very flavourful and blended perfectly with the hollandaise and soft poached eggs whose yolks ran when I broke them with my knife. The toast was tasty with just the right amount of crunch to softness ratio and appeared to be lightly buttered. There was a good amount of hollandaise too. Enough extra so that I could slide bits of toast around in it. I would definitely eat this again. The best eggs benedict I have ever had. A perfect harmony of ingredients. I'll get a photo next time. For now, just imagine it.Labels: breakfast |

| Post-Assignment Celebration! |
Hooray! An update, at last! Let the gastronomic delights be adored!
I found myself with a sushi craving as the hours ticked closer to noon. I particularly had a craving for eel. I headed to Bien Sushi and Donburi on Shortland St. I decided to keep my meal light to save room for dessert so I just go 4 pieces. Despite, the miniture proportions I carefully savored every bite and every bite was delicious!
On the top left is my beloved teriyaki eel sushi. I love the texture of eel - it's so moist and soft. It goes perfectly with teriyaki. However, for some reason the addition of the teriyaki makes me think it tastes like chicken but with a nicer texture. I've yet to discover what eel actually tastes like.
On the top right is sushi with pork in a sweet miso sauce. Tasty but nothing prolific. I like anything with miso.
On the bottom left is squid sushi. I quite liked this. It tasted different to the other raw squid I have had. Hard to describe but it had a definite seafood taste unlike the eel.
On the bottom right is my favourite (next to the eel), inari sushi. You can't go wrong with inari. Sweet vinegar rice in sweet bean curd. It's double the sweet and triple the satisfaction.
After my little Japanese feast, I headed to Michel's Patisserie near Chancery to have the post-assignment celebration cake I have been planning. It's a good enough excuse to eat cake, though one shouldn't really need an excuse to eat cake. I stared a long time at the glass display, full of so many cakes and pastries that I could have happily eaten all of. I finally settled on the chocolate mousse cake and a hot chocolate. The cake was good (not amazing though). It was made of light moist chocolate sponge layered with light chocolate mousse and topped with chocolate ganache. The hot chocolate was pretty good too, though I've yet to find a hot chocolate that really makes me jump for joy. I rate this higher than average though because some tend not to have enough chocolate or have a bitter taste that I will only allow in blocks of dark chocolate.
So that was my day in fooding. I thought y'all would appreciate my update. I had you in mind as I was eating.Labels: chocolate, dessert, Japanese |
